Our three tiny cubs that came to the Vietnam rescue centre last year have steadily grown into “mini moon bears” and recently celebrated their first birthday! All three are over 55kg now with Olly tipping the scales at 67kg!
Of course with all this growing to do, fuel is very important and if there’s one thing these cubs love, it’s food! Their second favourite thing is playing. Now enjoying their new dens in the quarantine area, they love to chase each other up and down then sit in the water bowls to cool off!
Mausi is a gentle bear who is friends with everyone and is always the first to check out a new toy. Mara gets smarter every day and has worked out how to get food from a bamboo puzzle feeder by dropping it in water so the food floats out! Olly, who is becoming equally clever, has learned this trick from Mara and uses water to melt frozen ice pops faster so he can get to the goodies inside. Rather like puppies, these cubs love to chew and are kept busy for hours with meaty bones, rawhides and kindly donated Nylabones. Whole coconuts that are very tricky to crack into also keep them entertained.
Even better, the trio has been joined by two new playmates - Marmite and more recently, Mischa. Marmite is a very passive bear who fitted in with no trouble and is good friends with Mausi. Olly was a little surprised by the arrival of Mischa, to find out he wasn’t the only man in town any more! However the boys have now come to an agreement and enjoy a good rough wrestling match.
Of course five young cubs together are one big handful of mischief and they make the staff laugh every day with their hilarious antics.
