Sun, fun and fancy dress – families turn out despite the heat!
Africa Djembe were a huge hit with the crowd.

Hundreds of families enjoyed the festivities at our fun day at Discovery Bay Plaza (in conjunction with the plaza’s popular flea market) in mid-July 2007 – despite it being one of the hottest days of year!
Our exuberant emcee Simon Broad, other dedicated volunteers and members of the AAF team braved the heat to host a series of fun activities to raise awareness of our work to help cruelly treated cats, dogs and bears in Asia. Presentations by Jill (and Dr Eddie) and our Education Manager Philip Stride went down well with the crowd.
Senegalese drummers, Africa Djembe, were a big hit with their unique high-energy brand of music – their festive drumming attracted lots of toe-tapping music lovers.
While the fabulously dressed Africans were drawing in the crowds, Animals Asia staff were on hand to answer questions and hand out leaflets, raising both awareness and funds (more than HK$10,000).
AAF’s fabulous merchandise was also popular with the crowds, with T-shirts, plush Moon Bears, baseball caps and keyrings flying off the tables. Kids were kept busy with lucky draws and games, such as arts and crafts, photo-taking with “Moonie” the Moon Bear (a big thanks to Keir for sweating it out inside that furry suit!). Lots of effort went into the children’s fancy dress competition – the theme being animals, of course.
Hong Kong cartoonist and author Larry Feign kindly agreed to sign copies of his new book, “HongKongitis” at Dymocks Discovery Bay. Larry is giving all royalties from sales of his book to Animals Asia. People were lined up in the bookshop and one supporter came all the way from Sai Kung to get a signed copy of Larry’s book! His quirky look at Hong Kong – or as he puts it, “a neurotic view of Asia’s World City” – shows Larry has as much talent writing about his adopted home as he does immortalising it in cartoons.
A huge thanks to all our hardy volunteers, especially Simon who was all but wilting in the sun and our ever-smiling Julie and Caribbean for organising such a great day.
Hong Kong businesses were also very supportive of the event – please support our wonderful sponsors listed below.
